Veteran's Summit (June 2008)On June 5, 2008 and June 6, 2008, members of Congress, college presidents, federal policy makers and student veterans came together to address the issues facing student veterans seeking higher education. Reflections and resources from the summit are below. "I'm going to give you an
assignment. Go back to your institution. Do an assessment of how you're
doing with programs and services for military veterans. You won't find a
pretty picture. What you will find is that you need to re-organize and
re-prioritize."
ReflectionsThe American Council on Education, through its Center for Lifelong Learning, held a first-of-its-kind summit for college and university presidents at Georgetown University, June 5–6, 2008. Entitled "Serving Those Who Serve: Higher Education and America's Veterans," this event allowed higher education leaders to engage in candid conversation about issues faced by America's veterans as they resume their education after wartime service. Highlights include keynote addresses by U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI), as well as presentations by Stephen Weber, president, San Diego State University; James McCormick, chancellor, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities; and Robert Shelton, president, University of Arizona, among others.
