Services for Candidates with Disabilities

Every test-taker for the GED Tests should have a fair opportunity to demonstrate his or her knowledge and skills under reasonable and appropriate test conditions.

Special accommodations for testing are available for adults with documented physical disabilities as well as emotional or psychological disabilities and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

You can also request accommodations for learning and cognitive disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. Each request is considered on an individual basis.

Accommodations may include:

  • Extended time
  • Use of a scribe
  • Use of a talking calculator or abacus
  • Supervised frequent breaks

Submitting Your Request

Using the "Candidate Checklist," make sure you have completed all of the required forms and spoken with a health practitioner or advocate who can verify your disability or health condition. Submit the testing accommodations form to your local GED testing center. The testing center staff will review it for completeness and forward through the approval process. Once it has been reviewed, your local GED Chief Examiner will notify you regarding the outcome and, if appropriate, the approved accommodations. You will not incur any additional charges for these accommodations.

Examples of Conditions Eligible for Accommodations:

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (all types)
  • Emotional/Mental Health: schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, etc.
  • Physical/Chronic Health Disability: blindness, low vision, deaf, hard of hearing, HIV, diabetes, mobility impaired, etc.
  • Learning disabilities: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, etc.
