
Patricia CormierDr. Cormier has been President of Longwood University for 14 years. During this period of time, the institution has doubled its enrollment to 5000 students, achieved university status, moved to NCAA Division I Athletics, invested $350 million in the physical plant, achieved endowment assets of $57 million, completing its first-ever comprehensive campaign totaling $33.5 million, and is now ranked #8 among public comprehensive institutions in the southeast region of the United States, 25th among both private and public comprehensive institutions.
She has been in higher education administration for 46 years, beginning at the Tufts New England Medical Center, followed by six years at the University of Virginia in the Department of Pediatrics, twelve years at the University of Pennsylvania as an Associate Dean, achieving tenure in 1980-81. She was selected as an American Council Fellow in Academic Administration in 1982-83 and went on to becoming Vice President and Dean of the Faculty at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. In 1988 she became Vice President for Development and Alumni/AE Affairs at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (parent company was Allegheny Health Services of Pittsburgh) and was recruited by Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina where she served as Vice President of Academic Affairs until chosen as Longwood’s president in 1996. Dr. Cormier has raised over $125 million from private donors throughout her career. Dr. Cormier has a long track record in academic administration with specific expertise in leadership development, board relationships, and university advancement, including fund raising, marketing, alumni relations, student recruitment and retention and government relations. She lectures and provides workshops throughout the United States, including the University of Virginia, the ace Fellows Program, the New Presidents Academy for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine at Drexel University. She has a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Virginia. She is the recipient of two honorary degrees and many awards from professional organizations. She is the author of two books, chapters in books and many professional publications and presentations. Dr. Cormier is married to Dr. Raymond Cormier, a world renowned medieval and comparative literature scholar. They have two children and one and a quarter grandchildren!
