2008 Annual Meeting Highlights

ImageThe ACE Annual Meeting is one of the largest gatherings of higher education leaders in the country. 

ACE's 90th Annual Meeting, Taking Charge of Our Future, was held February 9-12, 2008 in San Diego, California.

The meeting opened with the Robert H. Atwell Lecture entitled, Each and All: Creating a Sustainable American Higher Education System given by Gail O. Mellow, President of LaGuardia Community College.

Other topics and speakers included Leveraging Academic Leadership for Global Competition by Craig R. Barrett, Chairman of the Board, Intel; Immigration:  Challenges on Both Sides of the Border by Carlos Fuentes; Author, Statesman, and Scholar; Born Digital, Learning Differently by John Seely Brown, Senior Fellow and Advisor to the Provost, University of Southern California; and a Government Relations Update by Terry Hartle, ACE’s Senior Vice President for Government and Public Affairs.

A special presentation regarding veterans attending college, From Combat to Classroom included Judy Genshaft, President, University of South Florida; LCpl. Brendan Hart, USMC Retired; Julia O’Dell, President, National Association of Veterans Upward Bound; Charles B. Reed, Chancellor, California State University System; and James Wright, President, Dartmouth College.

Campus Security, Response and Recovery in a New Era was discussed by Janice M. Abraham, President and CEO, United Educators; Steven J. Healy, Immediate Past President of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrator;  Lester A. Lefton, President, Kent State University; and Charles W. Steger, President of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Special events included The Women’s Leadership Dinner with a keynote address on by Arianna Huffington, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief, The Huffington Post and author of On Becoming Fearless.
